It computes your position's real uncollected fees — the same live calculation the Positions tab shows — converts to a dollar value, and compares against the threshold you set. When it crosses, it fires, once, not repeatedly.
Some LPs prefer to let fees accumulate before collecting, to save on gas from frequent small collections. This alert lets you set exactly where that line is in dollar terms, rather than checking manually or guessing.
Collecting fees is itself an on-chain transaction with its own cost. Setting a threshold meaningfully above typical gas costs on that chain is usually the more efficient approach than collecting the instant any fee accrues.
